Point Leo Entry Undergrounding of Electrical Supply, Seeking Funding. Overview In June 2001 a Management Plan was prepared By Robin Crocker and Associates for the PLFC of M and Department of Conservation and Environment. As part of that plan the Entry to the Park and Campground was isolated as an area of specific consideration. The PLFC of M has been implementing the recommendations of the report throughout the park and in the entry area. One of the main issues identified in the report and by the committee was the ‘uncoordinated facilities’ in the entry area, one of these being the overhead power supply. Over the past two years the PLFC of M has been investigating the feasibility of removing the overhead powerlines at the Park entry along Point Leo Rd. This has required a detailed design and costing to be prepared for the project, and applications to the Powerline Relocation Committee for funding. Outcome Recently the PLFC of M has been successful in obtaining funding from the Powerline Relocation Committee on a half cost basis. The PLF C of M is committed to providing part of other half of the funding, but is still currently seeking other partners, for example, Local council, United Energy, DSE and corporate bodies, to make up the short fall. The PLFC of M sees this as a one off opportunity and at this stage the scheme is not guaranteed to proceed unless additional funding is sourced. Scope of Works It is proposed to underground the all the electricity supply (both high and low voltage) from the pole about 100m north of Triggers shop, all the way south along Point Leo Rd. The High Voltage lines (the top level of wires) will be removed from the poles in Western parade, across Murray drive to the first pole West of Murray Drive. A preliminary plan is attached to this letter. The reason for the large extent of works is due to the need to terminate the undergrounding at a pole that can be suitably stayed. At all locations where wires cross Point Leo Rd they will be removed. All properties in Point Leo Rd that are currently supplied electricity from overhead, will now be required to be supplied via underground cables. These properties are being asked to pay the cost of their individual connections, in the order of $1500 to $2000 per property. Those properties in Western parade will continue to be supplied from their current location. Under the scheme being pursued by the PLFC of M, the low voltage powerlines and poles will remain in Western Parade. A small section will be completely underground, from the North side of Point Leo Rd to the first pole in western parade
Existing view to sea from entry.
Anticipated after view, with powerlines and poles removed.
