Point Leo is located on the picturesque shores of Western Port Bay, 70km south of Melbourne. The Point Leo Forshore Reserve encompasses 3.5kms of foreshore, delicate sand dunes, banksia woodlands, grasslands and creek side forests.
Bird lifeCamper and photographer Rob Loutit has taken some beautiful photos of the growing bird life on the foreshore. This is a Buff-banded Rail (scientific name: Gallirallus philippensis) that has been recently spotted in the wetland area. |

Camping Point Leo has over 168 camping sites, of which only 45 are powered. All sites are open during summer for camping. During winter camping is contained to the powered sites and the east creek foreshore area. Bookings are essential during summer, and recommended through out the rest of the year. The Ranger can be contacted on 5989 8333 or found in the office at the entrance to the park. Fires are strictly prohibited during daylight savings, but for the rest of the year are allowed at the rangers consent in approved fire containers. Camping is strictly prohibited at all times in the playground reserves and in cars. |
Surfing With over seven surf breaks in the Point Leo foreshore, you are bound to find a wave that suits your style. The best surf is two hours either side of the high tide and is biggest during the Autumn and Winter months. Beginners can take a lesson or try out their new skills out at Crunchie Point. Whilst the more experienced can surf the challenging Suicide Point. For more information the surf school meets most weekends at 10am at either the Crunchie Point or Surf Life Saving Club carpark, or drop into the local surf shop. |
Boating / Sailing Point Leo Boat Club has been established since 1960 and is located on the Point Leo back beach. The clubs racing season runs over summer form December to February. Point Leo Surf Life Saving Club Point Leo Surf Life Saving Club is located on the main swimming beach at Point Leo. The Surf Club patrols the main beach with the designated swimming area between the flags from the end of November through to Easter. The Surf Club offers a variety of programs including Nippers for children and training courses. Wetlands A walk on the paths through the wetlands provides rewarding views of some of the peninsulas indigenous flora and fauna. A short walk of about 1km circuit should take about 15 minutes. It is best to park at the Crunchies carpark and access the wetlands path to the south of the playground. There are a number of water birds using the wetlands such as ducks, White faced Herons, Ibis, Cormorants and others. Also a number of different species of frogs are in residence and can make quite a racket during the wet weather. Many wetland plants are growing here consisting of a number of species of rushes, sedges, grasses and lilies. Due to nesting birds, dogs are not permitted in the wetlands. |
Point Leo Coast Action Group Established in 1996,the coast action group was founded on the idea tha camping families, residents and local visitors had a long and proud history of enjoying the foreshore and felt a strong desire to "put back" into the foreshores environement. Major projects have included, construction of the wetlands, the boardwalk along East Creek and plainting over 10,000plants provide a strong social link amongst all users of the Point Leo Foreshore. The group meets 4 times a year and new weeders and planters are welcome. No age limit and just bring your working gloves! |
